Another Battle in Falkirk?…

 CELTIC V  FALKIRK   , SCOTTISH PREMIERSHIP,   SUNDAY 1st FEBRUARY    @ 16:00
LIVE IN   THE WILD ROVER   (see   WHERE-page)

We’re back to league action, with much of the focus being off the park as mongerers of rumours are working overtime speculating and informing us who may or may not be coming in the Celtic Park door, although this changes daily. What we do know is that Trusty will miss the match through suspension, and no other long-term absentees look likely to play beyond Saracchi. Cvancara seems fit to play, and may start again with Johnny Kenny not fit. Iheanacho should make the bench.

If the Bhoys win and Falkirk score, Martin O’Neill will become the fourth manager of Celtic to win 6 games in a row at home without reply. It’s doubtful he cares.

We will be watching in the Wild Rover. I’ll buy anyone a drink if they can tell me the first line of this email, as I’m trying to work out if anyone reads these emails.

Hail! Hail!

Wilfried Nancy gets a rapid introduction to European football with the visit to Celtic Park of Roma. It will be a stern test against a team who beat a team from Glasgow 2-0 easily only a few weeks ago, so this may give more of a chance for Nancy to show his tactics, or even his tactics board to Scottish pundits who think they give minty freshness.

No major lineup changes. Roma welcome back their Brazilian left back Wesley, although they miss Ukrainian striker Artem Dovbyk. James Forrest has returned to training, but perhaps too soon for a start.

Roma are 4th in the league, with Celtic 21st, so a difficult challenge for the Bhoys. We’re watching in the Wild Rover, as usual

Hail! Hail!

We have a new leader, not a new boss, according to Wilfried Nancy, who took charge after Martin O’Neill rounded out his tenure with a win over Dundee. We move to play the team whose victory prompted Brendan Rodger’s departure, Hearts.

Hearts have failed to score in their past two away games, while Celtic are slowly regaining players from injury, but perhaps can be expected to show few changes in personnel, although Nancy may look for a more ‘risky’ approach in attack.

In any case, we watch with interest, and will be in the Wild Rover.

Hail! Hail!

In what is almost certainly Martin O’Neill’s last match as temporary manager before being replaced by Wilfried Nancy, the Bhoys head to Easter Road for a push back towards the top of the Scottish Premiership after some stutters by their title rivals. Calum McGregor’s last minute goal rescued the points last week before an assured win and some good performances on Thursday. The same squad will return to Edinburgh, and MON will be looking for a final positive result after 5 wins from 6.

FEYENOORD V CELTIC  , UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE - LEAGUE STAGE,   THURSDAY 27h NOVEMBER  @    18:45

We’re away again on our travel for matchday and to Rotterdam, where the 27th in the League Bhoys play the 29th placed Feyenoord. Both teams have struggles with form and injuries, and coach Robin van Persie is in more trouble than if he were at a beauty pageant. League form has been very poor, where recently Europe League form has spilled over to the league, and Celtic have lacked the productivity that Feyenoord retain through the front four of Moussa, Sam Steijn, Leo Sauer and Ayase Ueda.

Martin O’Neill is able to call upon a back four with a stronger defensive record, but lacking in goals where the combinations of Tounekti, Kenny and Maeda haven’t yet fully clicked. More in hope than expectation as we await the arrival of a new coach, increasingly likely to be ‘Brother’ Wilfried Nancy, but Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney will have their work cut out to produce another rabbit from the hat.

We’re watching in the Wild Rover, as usual

Hail! Hail!

We’re back in league action after a phenomenal week of international football, where the interesting conversation yesterday would have been Schmeichel and Tierney, but Scales and Kenny will also have returned with a spring in their step. We head to the SMISA stadium to play St Mirren in a dress rehearsal for the League Cup final, but their league form has been less inspiring, with 4 losses and a draw. Celtic should see the same lineup available, with Alistair Johnston, Callum Osmand, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Jota, Kelechi Iheanacho and Marcelo Saracchi all still injured.

We’re back in the Wild Rover, and as highlighted before, the website for the European Association of Celtic Supporters is now live: www.europecelticfans.com and the Facebook page can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61583378311693

Celtic are back home at Paradise for the visit of Kilmarnock, in what some are speculating could be Martin O’Neill’s last match in charge. Multiple injury concerns as Calum Osmand joins Iheanacho, Johnston, Jota and Carter-Vickers, so further reason to regret the inability to replace proven forwards in the last transfer window.

Kilmarnock have lost their last four matches, and Marley Watkins is closing on a return from a foot injury, while Matty Kennedy and Djenairo Daniels remain out. Stuart Kettlewell has nine senior players and a shortage of goalkeepers as Tobi Oluwayemi  cannot face his senior club, and had taken over in goal from Strycek, out for 4 months.

We’re back in the Wild Rover, and as highlighted last week, the website for the European Association of Celtic Supporters is now live: www.europecelticfans.com and the Facebook page can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61583378311693

MIDTJYLLAND V CELTIC  , UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE - LEAGUE STAGE,   THURSDAY 6th NOVEMBER  @    18:45

Celtic jet out to Denmark today for the next challenge in Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney’s new and possibly brief era in charge. Midtylland are unbeaten in 3 in the league, and have an aggressive approach which saw them claim victory against Hibs and Nottingham Forest in European games. Celtic will look to push on from their weekend semi-final win, and have added goalscorer Calum Osmand to the squad, as the UEFA rule allowing injury replacements means he takes Carter-Vickers place. The injury list means an unchanged lineup is fairly likely for the Europa League.

An update was also promised, as the Brussels CSC have now become founder members of the European Association of Celtic Supporters, to give greater coordination and representation of the European CSCs. We sit alongside Dresden, Romani, Tremonia, Norway, Switzerland, Nurnberg, Koln, France and Bilbao in creating the Association, and a constitution, website and social media will follow, and I’ll keep everyone updated.

Hail! Hail!

What’s the Hampden Roar?

CELTIC V RANGERS  , SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP SEMI FINALS,   SUNDAY 2nd  NOVEMBER    @ 15:00
LIVE IN   THE WILD ROVER   (see   WHERE-page)

We’re at Hampden for the semi-finals of the League Cup, and two new managers in place since the last round. Martin O’Neill returns to a familiar role in the dugout, twenty years on, while Danny Rohl was 13 when O’Neill masterminded his first victory over the former holders of the title of the team he manages on Sunday.

Plenty of injuries to contend with, with doubts at left back, Johnston, Jota, Carter-Vickers and Iheanacho missing, but with an encouraging start under the new coaching setup. Rangers will take a boost from a first win over Hibs, but the intrigue will be the same as many years ago when O’Neill first took charge, and the outcome hopefully the same.

In the next update, I’ll let everyone know about the formation of the European Association of Celtic Supporters, and Ross Campbell will be visiting from Koln CSC and can also talk in person today (I’ll watch on London).

Hail! Hail!

So we’re back at Celtic Park after two away losses, and more importantly after a turbulent few days when we discovered that Brendan Rodgers had resigned, Dermot Desmond had decided he never liked him anyway, the fans are going to protest, and Martin O’Neill is too much of a football addict to turn down  the chance to take the reins, at least temporarily, supported by Shaun Maloney.

It all creates a fascinating backdrop, and the intrigue of whether the pair can turn around a team lacking in confidence and invention. Daizen Maeda may be fit enough to play once more, but the other injuries are less clear. Falkirk have won their last two games, and are well organised under John McGlynn.

In the next update, I’ll also let everyone know about the formation of the European Association of Celtic Supporters. Brussels CSC has been invited to be founder members of a new European organisation, pioneered by Ross Campell of Koln CSC, and we have had a meeting and the initial structures are being put in place to have better coordination and representation in Europe. I’ll keep you posted.

One of the biggest matches of the season already, and against the current league leaders as Celtic travel to Tynecastle after a mediocre run of games culminating in the truly tepid loss to Dundee last week. An improved showing against Sturm Graz in midweek hopefully points to a better course ahead, but the Bhoys will likely be without Iheanacho and Johnston, while Carter-Vickers joins Jota on the long-term injury list.

Hearts are flying high, and we’ll be hoping for further progress and desire, live in the Wild Rover.

Hail! Hail!

A short note also to commemorate the passing and recent funeral of our friend and former CSC member Cathal. Cathal was a long-standing member of Brussels CSC.

Together with his wife Cristina, they were joint secretaries for 10 years and fulfilled the role with dedication. Membership records were kept up to date and membership cards distributed efficiently. Cathal
and Cristina   continued to attend games across several venues, including latterly in the Wild Rover. The Brussels CSC were represented at Cathal's    funeral on Friday and sent a wreath.

Celtic are at home for the next match in the league stage of the Europa League, and welcome Braga. The Portuguese side spent big in the summer, but have failed to gel, and are winless in the last 5 games. Teh signings include Gustaf Lagerbielke, who may only have played 10 times for Brendan Rodgers, but who has started all games for Braga.

No new injuries to report for Celtic, but the elusive goals we haven’t managed to find in much quantity would be a welcome addition on a big European night at Celtic Park.

We’re now seeing the integration of new signings Iheanacho, Tounekti and Balikwisha to the extent that it’s the first time this author hasn’t checked his spelling. After the midweek draw and midweek impact of two from those three we should expect two of those to start against Hibs, who have been better organised in recent months, but have struggled for a win, conceding one fewer goal than they have scored. With Kieron Bowie up front, they have potential for goals or the creation of them.

Hibs remain, like Celtic, undefeated domestically, and will feel they can compete. Brendan Rodgers will look for better flow from the Bhoys, and for a greater cutting edge.

Hail! Hail!

We’re in Serbia tonight, as the Celts kick off the Europa League campaign with a tough away trip to a team who have lost at home twice in their last 13 Europa League home games, and are utterly dominant in their domestic league.

Changes will possibly be the match return of Anthony Ralston and Daizen Maeda, with Marko Arnautovic the big name for Red Star, and plenty of young prolific attackers, and a raucous atmosphere expected.

For info, the Brussels CSC is part of the Celtic Fans Collective representative body. The new group - led by a steering group including fan media, supporter groups and active support groups - has been started to hold the Parkhead club to account. Please get in touch if you have any queries.

Today’s game will see a protest, endorsed by the Brussels CSC, where fans will arrive late, although not as late as the Celtic board left it to sign replacements at the end of the transfer window. We’ll see if new signings Kelechi Iheanacho, Sebastian Tounekti, Michel-Ange Balikwisha can form a new frontline, and quickly. We’re short of options at right back, with Ralston and Johnston likely to miss out, so Colby Donovan will likely step in, and similarly Marcelo Saracchi may have to deputise for Tierney. Auston Trusty also misses out.

Kilmarnock have drawn their last four games, putting them two places in the league above our last opponents, and we’re back on plastic at Rugby Park.
It’s acceptable to turn up on time today in the Wild Rover.

RANGERS V CELTIC  , SCOTTISH PREMIERSHIP,   SUNDAY 31th  AUGUST -    KICK-OFF @ 13:00
LIVE IN   THE WILD ROVER   (see   WHERE-page)

Labelled ‘Battle of the Infirm’ in some quarters, today’s intriguing matchup between Celtic and the latest group of journeymen to labour under the mantle of Rangers will be most interesting in the consequences of the outcome. It could already be manager Russell Martin’s final match, although he has been given licence to spend, notably Bojan Miovski, sometime linked with Celtic, who may start today.

Celtic’s spending has come late in the window, too late for the Champions League, but Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Marcelo Saracchi should join the squad, and maybe for the former, the  team. More may be on the way, and it may or may not be a farewell match for Adam Idah, depending on other movements. Denmark striker, Kasper Dolberg, and Tunisia winger Sebastian Tounekti continue to be linked wit conflicting reports.

Both teams will look for a performance, and a result, and the Rangers are likely to reinstate Tavernier for a reunion with Maeda, while Raskin will sit this out, as he is anxious to leave. We go again.

Hail! Hail!

Back to the Wild Rover again, for the second of the two legs of the playoffs for the Champions League, with no goals in the tie.

We’ve made the 3,737 mile voyage to Kazakhstan, where Kairat will look to defend, counter, fall, pretend to be injured and essentially do all they can for the promised land of the Champions League.

Celtic will have to do better than their toothless display in Glasgow to progress, and to have some ideas of how to get more creativity and be aware of Kairat disrupting the flow of the match. We look to march on!

CELTIC V KAIRAT, CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PLAYOFF,   WEDNESDAY 20th AUGUST -    KICK-OFF @ 21:00
LIVE IN   THE WILD ROVER   (see   WHERE-page)

Back to the Wild Rover again, as we’re back on European nights, for the first of two legs of the playoffs for the Champions League, so named as all English sides qualify.

We’re visited tonight by Kazhak side Kairat, who we will not take lightly as they are only a few weeks before the end of their season, with some talent in their ranks, and the Celtic board ‘bhoyed’ by results elsewhere meaning the biscuit tin crowbar waits until the cash prize has bee attained, seemingly.

Nevertheless, the Bhoys will be professional, we hope, in their approach to this game, with only long-term absentee Jota missing, and some wins with a little style underway through the league. A sunny evening in Glasgow, hopefully ended with some daylight to give us a clear path in Europe.

We’re back in the Wilde Geese before our return to the Wild Rover, as the Friday night sports night (also featuring Liverpool v Bournemouth) kicks off at 20:00 with the English match, then Celti in the League Cup at 20:45.

The Bhoys have no injury news, but some squad rotation can be expected and maybe time to blood Inamura and Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, and game time for other regulars. Falkirk have few points in their return to the Premiership, and few big names, although Arfield is well known and they have been tipped for top six potential in the league.

We’ll look to march on a retain the first trophy we won last year.

We don’t mean the Wild Rover, but to Pittodrie (literally, the ‘place of dung’) for today’s match, where Celtic travel to meet the ‘winners’ of the Scottish Cup. A robust affair is expected, and few changes in the lineup, with only Jota still out through long term injury. Johny Kenny and Yamada will both be hoping to feature after the former signed a long term contract and the latter still waits for his debut.

A few changes in the Aberdeen lineup, but Brendan Rodgers will hope for a less meek display than the cup final.

We should be back in the Rover today, but if not it will be screened in the Wild Geese next door.

CELTIC V ST MIRREN  , SCOTTISH PREMIERSHIP,   SUNDAY 3rd AUGUST -    KICK-OFF @ 17:30

The maestro, Paul McStay, returns to Celtic Park where the champions resume domestic league duties and we unfurl the 2024/2025 League flag. We start the league campaign for 2025 – 2026 with some new faces. Kuhn’s gone to Como and Greg Taylor to PAOK, but Keiran Tierney has come home, and we have a few new and even returning players joining the squad today. More signings are on the horizon, but Nygren and Yamada may make the team at some point, while other projects such as Osmand and Inamura may have to bide their time.

The buddies finished in the top six last campaign, and held the Bhoys to a draw in May at Celtic Park. They’ll have similar aspirations this season, but have lost a few starters. We’ll look to start strong and fast, and take our place back at the top of the league as quickly as possible.

Some of the CSC attending the opening match in person, but we’ll be watching in THE WILD GEESE as the Wild Rover will fully reopen once the sporting calendar gets fully up and running. We’ll also be linking up with the Paris CSC at the end of August, where we’ll head to the City of Light to watch the Glasgow derby together on August 31st. Let me know if you want to join.

Hail! Hail!
